Paros, the 2nd Mediterranean Conference “Environment and New Technologies”.
The conference focused on quality of life and climate change issues. The President of the Conference was Mr. Christos Zerefos, Full Member of the Academy of Athens, who has been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his contribution to highlighting the problems of global warming.
The 2nd Mediterranean Conference organized by MESONISOS and KEAN in Paros on: “Environment & New Technologies”.
The conference focused particularly on quality of life and climate change issues.
The conference was opened by the President of KEAN Mr. Stavros Milionis on Friday 25 September. Mr Milionis referred to the activities of KEAN, the need for continuous information on all technological developments and the need for scientific documentation of all proposed solutions.
Then the Prefect of Paros, Mrs. Gregoria Protolati, welcomed the conference and referred in particular to the need to protect the environment.
The main part of the conference took place on Saturday 26 September.

The President of the scientific committee of the conference, Professor of the University of Athens and member of the Academy of Athens, Mr. Christos Zerefos, started the conference.
Mr. Zerefos in his presentation referred specifically to the Cyclades and the evolution of the Environment over the centuries. “The Environment in the Cyclades from Myth to the 21st Century” was the title of the presentation, which captivated the audience.
In his speech, Mr. Zerefos referred to the problem of water scarcity that the planet is going to face and the expected increase in temperature due to climate change.
Then, the Professor of the University of Patras, Mr. Panagiotis Giannoulis, an expert in Renewable Energy Sources, presented the new technologies in the field and the important achievements of the Renewable Energy Sources Laboratory of the University of Patras.
Mr. George Kampourakis, Assistant Professor of the University of Athens, presented the newest developments and the latest developments in the field of renewable energy. Professor of NTUA spoke about Noise and its effects on our health. He referred in particular to the problem of noise pollution in cities from “tampered” exhausts and the health problems that noise exposure may cause, especially in children. The message was clear: Beware of our exhausts!!!!
Mr. Konstantinos Helmis, Deputy Director of the European Commission. Professor of the University of Athens, spoke about air quality and how it is formed in enclosed spaces. Especially in school classrooms. It was a sensation that a place that has been exposed for a long time to harmful substances (cigarettes, chemicals, etc.) continues to emit harmful substances into the environment months after it has been attempted to be “cleaned”.
Mr. Anastasios Stamos, Senior Professor of NTUA, referred to the quality of our water and especially to the European Union’s Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. Then he referred to the quality of water in our country and new technologies that exist to improve it, but also to control polluting industries that contaminate the aquifer.
He presented new techniques and new materials in the field of photovoltaic systems.
Mr. George Leftheriotis, Assistant Professor of the University of Patras, spoke about wind energy and the development of new systems in this field.
While an integrated proposal for the formation of ecological blocks and Green Terraces was made by Mr. Michael Vrachopoulos, Professor of TEI of Chalkida.
The conference concluded on Saturday evening, 26 September, with the Gala Dinner at the Agnanti Hotel.
The event was honoured with the presence of the Prefect of Paros Mrs. Gregoria Protolati, the President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Paros Mr. Antonios Arkas and the Deputy Mayor of Paros Mrs. Anna Kagani.
The appointment was renewed for the 3rd Mediterranean Conference which will take place in Delos and Mykonos from 28-30 May. Preparations have already started with the sending of the relevant calls for papers to the Higher Educational Institutions of the country
